Explaining Clinical Depression

Are you trying to find out what is clinical depression? Then here you are, nowadays many people often end up being depressed about some crisis in their family or business. During the period of crisis even the strongest or the firmest person also tends to feel sad or upset.

How is clinical depression different from being sad or feeling blue? How and when does clinical depression become such a problem that you have to consult a doctor? To find out if you have clinical depression or not there are a few things to keep under cosideration.

Clinical depression is not caused by outer factors such as job loss or a death in the family, but is caused due to a emotional disorder, this is when the brain carries a defect and so is unable to give out the appropriate amount of chemicals or doesn’t produce the chemicals at all this makes the person feel sad.

This means he or she is upset or gloomy even when they are at good events or are doing things that normally should make them happy. It’s important to understand that clinical depression is caused by this physical defect or deformity because some people think that all they need to do is take a vacation or change some other circumstances in their life and their depression will go away. Unfortunately this is a very simplistic approach to the problem.

Those with clinical depression usually have very little self-esteem as they are no longer concerned with or care about virtually anything, including themselves personally.  They may neglect their responsibilities around the house, at their job, and even when it comes to their own family and may even neglect their own hygiene and personal appearance.

All of this comes from the overwhelming feelings of malaise or disinterest that are typical with clinical depression. A person suffering from this condition just does not have much of an interest in anything and seems to be constantly thinking “what’s the point?” This feeling often persists at all times and for years; it doesn’t let up even when faced with things they should have enjoyment in such as hobbies, friends, and even sexual activity.

This is completely different from general sadness, it is a deep feeling of sadness, and this is not just a negative attitude or ‘blue’ feeling. It also leads the patients to think of committing suicide. The depths of one’s feelings have a lot to do with whether or not you actually you have a condition or are just going through a bad patch.

It is very important to consult a doctor if you have a feeling that you are neglecting your duties towards your family and if you have this deep feeling for more than a few weeks.

There are medications, therapies and self-help methods under planned prescription for clinically depressed people.

Possible Causes of Depression

Before you look into finding a cure for depression, you need to find out how it happened in the first place. One of the leading causes of depression are the ‘feel good’ chemicals which includes in the way the brain regulates. People who will suffer from clinical depression are those whose brains do not release certain chemicals and those whose brains do not produce the right quantity of certain chemicals.

For having a happy mood these ‘feel good’ chemicals are very important, if they are not present in the body then the person ends up being sad. There are many more causes of depression which people will not understand or expect. Let’s try and find out more about it.

The imbalance of certain chemicals is one major cause of depression. Depression can be brought up by the outside factors. Some patients suffer from seasonal affective disorder, SAD. This is when they face depression when there is less sunlight around them, mostly during winter season.

Patients suffering from SAD are very sensitive when it comes to gloomy days, they prefer sunny days more. Staying inside during the gloomy days and also the cold air makes a person easily feel depressed.

Many of the sufferers are advised to change their light bulbs, for better light. They are also told to go out  and consume some fresh air, because lack of fresh air  is a weapon in causing depression.

It’s also thought that one can learn depressive and negative thinking which in turn will lead to clinical depression.  It’s as if a person is teaching themselves to be depressed and the body will eventually learn to be that way automatically.  You might compare it to someone that purposely walks with a limp – they will eventually have a real one!

A person who thinks over things like child abuse, crime, lack of self esteem, or other problems like job loss, financial problems, divorce, poor health and many more will unfortunately end up being depressed.

Only thinking negatively over things in extreme can make you end up with depression. Bad mood or one’s problems will not cause depression.

There are probably numerous other causes of depression.  Scientists and doctors are learning new things about this condition every single day.  As other examples, extreme anxiety can lead a person to depression as the body just shuts down to that heightened state of awareness.  Teenagers who have been victims of bullying are often prone to depression.

Those who have family members with depression have an increased chance of being diagnosed with it themselves.  But with all the causes of depression, doctors are also working hard to find more effective treatment options as well, so don’t hesitate to consult with his or her if you think you have clinical depression.
